Generative AI: A quick overview

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that creates new content rather than only analysing existing data. It can generate text, images, audio, video, code and data-driven outputs based on the patterns it has learned from large amounts of information. This ability to generate something new is what distinguishes Generative AI from many traditional AI systems.

What is Generative AI?

Generative AI uses advanced AI models that learn patterns and relationships from large amounts of data. When you give the model an instruction or prompt, it uses those learned patterns to generate a response. Depending on the model, that response could be:

  • Text: articles, summaries, emails, ideas or conversations
  • Images: illustrations, concepts and visual content
  • Audio: speech, music and other audio
  • Video: generated or transformed video content
  • Code: code generation, explanation and assistance
  • Data & Analysis: summaries, patterns, insights and analytical outputs

Traditional AI vs Generative AI

A simple way to understand the difference is to look at what each type of AI is designed to do.

Traditional AI typically analyses existing information to make a prediction, classification or decision. For example, it might determine whether a transaction is fraudulent, predict customer churn or classify an image.

Generative AI learns patterns from information and uses those patterns to create something new, such as a piece of text, an image, code or another form of content.

The distinction isn’t that one replaces the other. They are useful for different kinds of problems.

How Generative AI works: A simple view

You don’t need to understand the underlying mathematics to start working effectively with Generative AI. At a high level, think of the process like this:

1. Trained on data → 2. Learns patterns and relationships → 3. You provide an input or prompt → 4. Generates new content → 5. You review, refine and use it

That final step is important. Generative AI produces an output, but you decide whether that output is useful, accurate and appropriate for your purpose.

Where you already see Generative AI

Generative AI is increasingly embedded in everyday digital products and professional workflows. You may encounter it in:

  • Chatbots and conversational assistants
  • Content creation
  • Design and image generation
  • Code generation
  • Summarisation and insight generation
  • Marketing and sales tools

In the workplace, this means GenAI isn’t simply another standalone technology. It is increasingly becoming a capability built into the tools people already use.

Why it matters

Generative AI can help professionals:

  • Boost productivity by accelerating routine or time-consuming work
  • Support creativity by generating ideas and alternatives
  • Explore complex problems more quickly
  • Personalise content and experiences at greater scale
  • Create new possibilities for products, services and ways of working

The value, however, comes from how effectively you use it, not simply from having access to an AI tool.

Generative AI is powerful, but its outputs are not automatically correct. The quality of an output can depend on the information, context and instructions provided. Models can also produce inaccurate, incomplete or biased responses.

That’s why human judgement remains essential.

Use GenAI to help you explore, create, analyse and accelerate your work while continuing to review what it produces and decide what should actually be used. Think of Generative AI as a powerful collaborator in your workflow, not a replacement for your judgement.
